So, we all know Relena’s most famous lines: “Heero! I’m right over here so hurry and come kill me!!”

And even though this happens in the third episode and Relena develops as a character during the rest of the *50* episodes, that phrase has been enough to condemn her forever in fandom. 

As far as many yaoi fangirls are concerned, Heero belongs with Duo (or maybe Wufei or whatever, but that’s not my main concern) while Relena is the crazy, overemotional, stalker girl who can’t understand that Heero is gay and not interested in her. (Or maybe what the fangirls are concerned with is that if they can’t have Heero, no one can. Whatever, the result is the same)

In fandom, Relena is frequently portrayed as obsessively tracking Heero down and destroying his life to force him with her, destroying Duo’s (or love interest’s) life for the same effect, and generally being a GIANT BITCH who needs to be BEATEN DOWN in the end. 

Even a slightly kinder portrayal of her depicts her as a naive idiot who has never experienced hardship in her life. Despite the fact that she was running around during a war, saw people die, saw her father killed right in front of her, was hunted through the streets by Une, and so on and so forth. Also, the poor kid’s 15. Cut her a break.

AND YET Quatre and Trowa are shipped all over the place. They are a practically permanent couple in any fic that has even a remote slash connection. 

BUT guess what Quatre said, after he had grappled with Trowa on the battlefield and had barely known the guy a day. 

After Trowa leaves Quatre’s little oasis in the desert, Quatre’s head Maguanac Rasid, his main dude, his right hand man, the guy he relies on for military advice, says:  ”Should we let him go like this?…He could attack!”

And Quatre replies: “I almost wish he would. Then at least I’d be able to see him again.”

Aw, isn’t that sweet. Quatre wants to see Trowa again *so badly* that he kind of hopes Trowa ATTACKS his fortress.

OK, Why is this sentiment ok for Quatre to voice and not for Relena?

Let’s think…BECAUSE HE’S A DUDE. 

I CALL DOUBLE STANDARDS. 

When Relena calls out (in private) for Heero to come kill her so that she can see him again, she’s “crazy.” When Quatre tells his military advisor he’d like if Trowa attacked their secret hide-out so that he can see the stranger again, it’s totally ignored by fandom. Yup. Because THAT’S SLASH and IT’S MEANT TO BE while Relena and Heero are obviously TOO DIFFERENT TO MAKE IT WORK. BECAUSE RELENA’S A GIRL. 

It’s an attack on Relena that so much of GW fandom has clung to that ONE line of Relena’s, out of the entire series, in order to bash her character. And I mean BASH it people. Does anybody remember that “Heero is Not Toast” site where there were TORTURE CHAMBERS for Relena?

And yet…when Quatre expresses the exact SAME SENTIMENT only ONE EPISODE LATER everybody’s like…whatevs. 

WTF, PEOPLE? 

I am so sick and tired of repeatedly seeing the same old trope dragged out again and again about the women in fandom. The older I am, the more apparent it is, and the more pissed off I get. Apparently as far as fandom is concerned, women are homophobic harpy stalkers who simply cannot let go of their man. 

[Edit: And the older I get, the more excellent Relena and other Female Characters fanfic I find - awesomeness ^_^]

How do I know that Relena’s nauseating portrayal in fandom is a trope, some sort of disfigured, grotesque stereotype of a female? Because in any kind of Treize Kushrenada slash fanfic (is there any other kind? lolz), Lady Une plays the EXACT SAME ROLE. 

Does Treize fall in love with Zechs or perhaps Wufei? Une is right there to fawn over Treize and destroy the other man, all the while spouting homophobic crap, helpfully providing a little zap of angst to the fic. Or just, you know, stalking. Either way. In essence, she plays the role Relena plays whenever Heero falls for a guy. When two VERY DIFFERENT CHARACTERS can play the exact same role in a fic, that’s a trope. And it’s extremely disheartening.

Whether it’s Sakura of Naruto, Ginny of Harry Potter, Uhura of Star Trek Reboot, Jo of Supernatural, or Relena of Gundam Wing, authors just love to BASH THE GIRLS AND SLASH THE GUYS. 

In addition, it’s not uncommon for the girls/women to be totally humiliated in these stories. There will be a line from one of the guys saying something like, “Ugh, you’re an ugly skank whore bitch, why would I even want you?” or maybe the girls are physically/sexually HUMILIATED, their skirts pulled down or blown up to reveal “slutty” underwear. The “slutty” underwear emphasizes how “slutty” the girls are and thereby increases their shame, totally deservedly of course. And didn’t practically the whole world just have a bunch of MARCHES about this whole SLUT SHAMING THING? 

THIS IS BULLSHIT. STOP IT. 

Let’s do a little mental exercise in which Quatre was a girl instead of a boy. (I’m not even going to deal with the sad feminization of Quatre in fanfic - that’s a rant for another time.) So female Quatrina a) invites Trowa to attack her secret base anytime! after facing him in battle b) when she loses her father, in a fit of mad emotion she destroys a colony and then tries to kill Trowa c) she tracks Trowa down to the circus and doesn’t let him live his peaceful, amnesiac life there [interpretation for comparative purposes]

Wow, then I guess if Quatrina were a girl, fandom would actively HATE HER. Just like not a small part of fandom ACTIVELY HATES Relena Peacecraft and Dorothy Catalonia. (Oh, and every once and awhile, Dorothy also plays the gay-hating harpy getting between Quatre and Trowa. But it’s not a regular occurrence, unlike harpy!Relena and harpy!Une.) Fortunately for Quatre, he’s got a dick, so he’s avoided the FLAME OF HATRED FOR STRAIGHT WOMEN.

It’s especially clear in Relena’s case when she is judged pretty much solely on the basis of a sentiment uttered by both herself and Quatre, and yet the treatment of those two characters by fans is entirely different. 

To totally degrade a female character, reducing her to a mere trope, is just so frustrating to read, fandom. 

Come on, people. 

[A.N. I wrote most of this in a rage after re-reading an old 1x2 fic with a nice, character-driven romance and then getting blindsided with Relena installing cameras in their bedroom in order to take pictures of them having teh gay sex and then sending those pictures to Heero’s boss and then pressuring Heero to get engaged with her all the while Heero articulating his absolute distaste for her. Say what?! I realize that there are increasing amounts of good Relena characterizations out there which is why I’ve been sticking to “a great deal” of fandom and not “all of fandom;” and also that this is old news for peeps in the GW fandom- but I wanted to get this off my chest.]
